Military

13th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry<p> 13th Cavalry Regiment [also called 10th and 11th Regiment Mounted Infantry] was assembled at Abingdon, Virginia. It was assigned to the Department of East Tennessee and later the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee. The unit confronted the Federals in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia, and on April 27, 1865, surrendered at Louisa, Kentucky. The field officers were Colonel Benjamin E. Caudill, Lieutenant Colonel D.J. Caudill, and Major John T. Chenoweth.

Pvt. Calvin Unthank enlisted in Company H 64th Virginia Infantry April the 25th 1863 at Harlan, Harlan County, Kentucky, USA Court House(now Harlan, Harlan County, Kentucky, USA,Kentucky.)he was only 17 years old when he enlisted with the 64th.He served with the 64th Virginia Infantry until he was captured at Cumberland Gap,Tn by the Union Army. Pvt. Calvin Unthank escaped and hid from the Union Army inside of the famous Cudjo's Cave at Cumberland Gap until it was safe to avoid capture and rejoin his fellow Confederates.

Pvt. Calvin Unthank served with Company G 25th Virginia Cavalry before joining Company H of the 13th Kentucky Cavalry.Company K of the 13th had many Harlan, Harlan County, Kentucky, USA men in its ranks.Near the end of the war Company K of the 13th Kentucky Cavalry was assigned to the 64th Virginia Infantry.They were assigned to the 64th during the Battle of Jonesville,Virginia.

Pvt. Calvin Unthank was paroled at Cumberland Gap with several of his compatriots April 28 1864.He drew a Confederate Civil war pension June 12 1912,and died in Harlan, Harlan County, Kentucky, USA Kentucky August 16,1930.This Web-page is respectfully dedicated to him and to the ancestors of the men of Camp Unthank.
