Richmond NORTON/WISE-Mrs. Lelia Maude Beaty Richmond, 98, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Norton Community Hospital, Norton. She was born Feb. 4, 1904, in Wise, the daughter of the late state Sen. John Morton Beaty and Mary Flanary Beaty. She attended St. Hilda's School in Charles Town, W.Va. Mrs. Richmond was a dedicated servant to the community through her work and involvement in Norton Presbyterian Church, American Heart Association and the University of Virginia's College at Wise, where she served on the Foundation Board. She was a successful businesswoman, exemplified by her 30-year management of the family store, Beaty and Company, and her service on the Board of Directors of the Wise County National BAnk and Appalachian Regional Hospital. Her true passion was playing bridge. at 98, she played daily if she could find three additional people to deal cards. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Benjamin Richmond; daughter, Mary Richmond Dooley; grandchildren, Bertie Dooley Butler and James Dooley; and her sister, miss Sarah Flanary Beaty. Surviving are her daughter, Billy Richmond Allen; grandchildren, Richard Dooley, Martha Dooley Beach, Cherry Dolley Francis, John Pearson Allen, Thomas Tennant Allen and William Beaty Allen; 13 great-grandchildren with one more due later this year; two great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Mayo Beaty Dotson and her children, Bernard Earl Dotson, Thomas Young Dotson and Molly Dotson Morgan. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Norton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mike Porter and Rev. Molly Dotson Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Norton Presbyterian Church, Norton. Contributions may be made to Norton Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 96, Norton, Virginia, USA 24273, or the University of Virginia's College, 1 College Ave., Wise, Virginia, USA 24293 in memory of Mrs. Lelia Maude Richmond.
